Have you learned to drive? Check! Have you purchased a vehicle? Check! Do you have a driver’s license? No? You’re not quite ready to start driving yet.
Like every other driver in Ghana, you must have a driver’s license. After all, a driver’s license is a legal document that allows you to operate a particular car and so with the License plate.
Driving any vehicle without a license may get you in serious trouble with the law, resulting in a fine or perhaps arrest.
What do you need to know about driver’s licenses, and how do you determine which one you are required to get?
There are six driver’s licenses in Ghana; let’s get to know them.
First on our list is the Type A driver’s license. This license is offered to drivers who operate vehicles that do not have gearboxes. Such cars include sports bikes, scooters, and off-road bikes. Motorcycle riders are usually the ones who are required to obtain this kind of license.Â
The motor size of these vehicles can be up to or greater than 250cc.
Â
The Type B license type is for drivers of sedans, minibuses, sprinter buses (tro tro), cross-country vehicles, and pickup trucks. The gross weight of this vehicle, along with the passengers, should not exceed 5000kg. Type B license holders are the most frequent among the license categories.Â
You must pass one or all of the following criteria to get this license:
1) Be a registered business or private individual
2) Vehicle cannot carry more than 15 people
Â
The Type C license is next on our list of Ghanaian driver’s licenses. This one is necessary for cars that can accommodate 16 to 45 passengers.
The weight should be 10000kgs or less. Because of the vehicle’s use, all big commercial cars must obtain this license.
Â
Buses, coaches, and heavy freight vehicles require Type D permits. A class D driver may operate a vehicle carrying up to 65 people and a maximum weight of 350000kgs. This license is used by drivers of large passenger buses like VVIP and Intercity STC buses.
Â
Fifth on our list is the Type E license. They are required for heavy machineries, such as industrial construction equipment, transportation, and agricultural vehicles. Some examples of such equipment include graders, trucks, loaders, rollers, forklifts, harvesters, and other vehicles.
Â
The Type F license is the last on our list! This license is required for operators whose vehicles weigh more than 35000kg. Such cars include stretch buses, semi-trailer trucks, and other stiff vehicles.
That concludes our list of the types of licenses and the vehicles that require them. Of course, each car requires a different approval process based on various requirements, so remember to ask at the office which one you are required to get.
