In terms of sales, the compact SUV market has shot to the moon in recent years. Vehicles like the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, and Hyundai Tucson have made the market their own. But now, there is a new player in town. It comes from Italy and takes its name from a northeasterly Mediterranean wind. We are of course talking about the all-new Maserati Grecale.
The Grecale is smaller in size when compared to the Levante, and is closer in size to the Mercedes GLC. However, some styling cues are shared between the two Maserati models. Upfront is a new, larger grille, flanked by a new headlight design. There are three vents on the fender just above the front wheels, another design element shared throughout the Maserati range.
There is a large Maserati trident behind the two rear windows of the vehicle. Not only that, the rear light design is a throwback to old Maserati boomerang taillights seen on models like the 3200GT.
The interior of the Maserati Grecale is one of the classiest on the market. It packs several high-tech features, including a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster. In addition, the Grecale boasts two center screens used for all interior controls. The seats are covered with beautifully stitched leather, and the 20 cubic feet of cargo space is bigger than that of the Mercedes GLC, which has a mere 19 cubic feet.
If you are on the market for a powerful compact SUV, look no further. Maserati offers three engine choices with this luxury compact SUV. The most powerful is the Grecale Trofeo, which comes with a 3.0 liter, twin-turbocharged V6 lifted straight from the MC20 supercar. In the Grecale Trofeo, this engine makes 523 horsepower and 457 lb-ft of torque, which is good enough to launch the Grecale to 60 mph in just 3.6 seconds. In comparison, the Porsche Macan takes 6.0 seconds to get up to the same speed.
An all-electric version – called the Grecale Folgore, is also set to make its debut soon. When it launches, it will surpass the Trofeo as the fastest version in the lineup.
The Grecale also comes packing some of the latest technological features. As we mentioned earlier, there are 3 screens placed throughout the interior. Air suspension and adaptive dampers make sure that Grecale has various comfort options and handles better than its competition.
Speaking of the competition, the Grecale has plenty. It is to be expected, as the compact SUV market is at an all-time high. At its $60,000+ price point, the main rivals of the Grecale include the BMW X3, the Porsche Macan, and the fellow-Italian Alfa Romeo Stelvio. The Grecale stands above the competition with its powerful engine choices and luxurious interior. However, its reliability is yet to be seen.
With the introduction of Grecale, Maserati looks to make the luxury compact SUV market their own. But, one thing is for certain, the Maserati Grecale is easily the classiest compact SUV money can buy today.
