WILL INSTALLING A DOWNPIPE MAKE A CAR LOUDER

The wideness of a downpipe exhaust determines how quickly exhaust fumes leave the engine. The faster the exhaust gases leave the engine, the more air the engine can suck in.

This results in an improvement in throttle response, torque, and horsepower gain of up to 10-20 bhp. However, this kind of modification has its downside. Let us take a look at the pros and cons.

PROS

• Improves exhaust sounds for both catted or catless. The fast flow of exhaust gases usually results in horsepower gain, better throttle responses, and increased torque.

CONS

• Catless downpipes result in the emission of toxic gases since there is no cat to reduce these gases. This can lead to failed emission tests and increased environmental pollution.

IS IT LEGAL TO USE A LOUD EXHAUST IN GHANA

There is the recommended decibel, usually around 74, for all drivers using public roads in Ghana. Going above this is considered a disturbance to the environment.  You may be able to use a loud exhaust when off-roading or racing since it’s done mostly in a secluded part of the city. 

If, however, you drive mostly on public roads, you may want to visit a certified exhaust workshop to tune your exhaust to the recommended decibel.
