5 STEPS ON HOW TO IMPORT CAR PARTS TO GHANA

The car part market is big in Ghana, with parts of the capital dedicated to this market. It is commonly known as spare parts among the locals. Most car owners buy their car parts here. It is a million-dollar industry with incredible potential for growth.

Let’s show you how to import car parts into Ghana step-by-step.  The first thing you need to do is:

1. GATHER INFORMATION

Collect the necessary information on the parts you want to bring in.

• Find two or three sources(suppliers)
• Shipping Options
• How much will it cost? 
• Are they second-hand or brand new?
• Duty and tax charged at the port

The next step is to find out and decide.

• Port Clearance/Customs Regulations? 
• What will you need to clear it at the port? 
• Do you need a clearing agent?
• Do you need to leave the country?

2. CHOOSE YOUR SUPPLIER

Once you decide how you want to begin, you can now choose a reliable supplier. We recommend that you physically inspect the parts before they are shipped, which means you may need to travel to your supplier’s location.

Or, you can delegate this part to someone you trust to do inspections and handle payments. Inquire about a part payment deal, where you pay part of the total cost and the rest upon shipment or arrival.

Not all suppliers in the market will agree to this, but the main point is to secure your investment as much as possible. 

3. CLEAR YOUR GOODS FROM THE PORT

Upon arrival of your products at the port, you must move with haste. If you don’t, your container will attract demurrage charges. You should already have a clearing agent/company that will help you through this part.

They will charge you a fee and assist you with the relevant forms and payment of all charges. Information about clearance at the ports is available here. If you can’t find what you need, your clearing agent will help you.

There may be other charges and requirements during clearance, but most of this will be determined at the port. Prepare yourself for surprises. 

4. HAVE A VEHICLE ON STANDBY TO MOVE YOUR CLEARED CAR

Once your consignment clears, you must move them to their final destination. Make sure you have a vehicle prepared for this. If you are renting, you should have already negotiated a fee to transport your goods.

You might also need help transferring the goods from their container to your truck or moving the whole container. People at the port provide these services, labourers, trucks, etc. You may also want to go with your crew. This process is also another cost you have to factor in.
