Why Are Compact Cars Popular Among Ghanaian Uber Drivers?

If you are a user of Uber in Ghana, you may have noticed that most drivers use a compact car as their go-to choice to for their Uber business. It makes you wonder, why compact cars? They are certainly not the most interesting or most comfortable cars available for purchase. So why are most of Ubers in Ghana compact cars?

As it turns out, there are reasons why compact cars are the ‘chosen’ among Uber drivers. Let’s find out what these reasons are, shall we?

Compact cars are basically little cars. If you don’t require a lot of space, this is the perfect vehicle for you. The only condition for a car to be classified as a compact is that it should have an interior volume index of 100-109 cubic feet and is able to comfortably seat up to four passengers.

The best examples of the compact class are hatchbacks, liftbacks, and smaller sedans. The cost of these cars vary according to the brand, model, and trim package. Most of them are smaller and less modernized in comparison to other cars, let’sfind out what makes them so highly rated among Uber drivers.

Using a compact car for Uber services can make a big difference in the success and profits you can make as a business owner. The first reason is their pricepoint, for every business owner, pricepoints are what largely determines the success of your business.

Uber drivers choose compact cars above other types of vehicles, because the price is right. Since compact cars are like the minimalist versions of cars, pricing is reduced considerably as advanced tech features are usually excluded. Compact cars are the cheaper alternative, and that’s why it’s a favorite among drivers in Ghana.

That said, not all compact cars are priced low. In fact, latest models like the Kia Rio 2022 pricing can go as high as GHC 80,000. Uber drivers work around this by chosing older models, as they are relatively cheaper when compared to their newer versions.

Popular compact cars like the Chevrolet Spark LS 2012 and the Hyundai Atos 2006 pricing can range from just GHC 15,000 to somewhere around GHC 32,000.

Fuel-efficiency is the second most important reason why Uber drivers prefer to use compact cars. Compact cars (or smaller cars in general) are lighter, require smaller engines to perform the same tasks, and have less aerodynamic resistance.

As a result, compact cars consume less fuel than their larger counterparts. Smaller cars with smaller engines can typically travel more miles per gallon (mpg) than larger engines. This makes them less expensive and more environmentally friendly.

Smaller cars are very easy to maintain because they have smaller engines, smaller bodies, and less complex parts. Uber drivers spend less of their earned revenue on car maintenance because the cost of fixing, replacing, and servicing is so low.

Since Uber drivers prefer older models of these cars, their parts are relatively inexpensive and easy to find in the automotive market.

Uber drivers transport passengers to all parts of the country. Because of this, they tend to drive on all types of roads, with some of these roads in poor or degrading condition.

In such cases, having a small, simple car comes in handy because they are much easier to maneuver and turn than their larger counterparts. This is beneficial for those who live in congested cities or on narrow streets. Parallel parking is also more convenient, as is squeezing into spaces in a crowded parking lot.
