FP1
Victor Martins made his Formula 1 weekend debut for Williams in FP1 at the Spanish Grand Prix, marking the start of a session once again dominated by Lando Norris. The McLaren driver, fresh off his Monaco victory, topped the timesheets with a 1m 13.718s, once again displaying his strong form. He finished over three-tenths clear of Max Verstappen in second, with Lewis Hamilton completing the top three for Ferrari.
FP1 was busy from the start, with most teams focusing on the hard C1 tyres initially, as Pirelli brought their hardest compounds to Barcelona. Haas reserve driver Ryo Hirakawa had an early off, while Liam Lawson voiced his frustration about a slow-moving Charles Leclerc. George Russell briefly topped the times on medium tyres at the halfway mark, but it was Norris who ultimately set the pace on softs. Charles Leclerc and Oscar Piastri rounded out the top five, while Racing Bulls’ Liam Lawson and Isack Hadjar, along with Haas’s Ollie Bearman, also showed promising pace, all aiming for points this weekend. Home hero Fernando Alonso reported a potential issue with his Aston Martin, further adding to the early session troubles.
FP2
FP2 was the time for the other McLaren of Oscar Piastri to shine, as the championship leader topped the session for the Spanish Grand Prix with a 1m 12.760s. This put him nearly three-tenths clear of Mercedes’ George Russell and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, the latter of whom recorded an identical time to Lando Norris in fourth, with Verstappen ahead due to setting his lap earlier.
The session was eventful, with Ollie Bearman suffering a spin, and traffic once again becoming a major talking point. Isack Hadjar talked about the traffic being “a joke,” while Fernando Alonso voiced frustration at Lewis Hamilton. After a promising weekend in Monaco, Ferrari appeared to struggle, with Charles Leclerc seen sliding and Hamilton lingering in 11th, a stark contrast to McLaren’s strong form.
