In a world where affordable rear-wheel-drive sports cars are rarer than hen’s teeth, we here at Supercars.com.GH have got not one, but TWO incredible options that’ll get your heart racing without emptying your wallet. The Subaru BRZ and Toyota GR86 are back for their second generation, and they’re better than ever before. But here’s the million-cedi question – which one deserves a spot in your garage – our newest Car of the Month, or its Toyota badged cousin? Keep reading to find out which of these twin beauties will leave you absolutely speechless!

The Ultimate Twin Dilemma

It’s a question that’s been keeping sports car enthusiasts awake at night – should you pick the Subaru BRZ or its nearly identical twin, the Toyota GR86? On paper, these two rear-wheel-drive beauties are damn near impossible to tell apart. Same 2.4-liter flat-four engine pumping out 228 horsepower, same lightweight construction at around 2,820 pounds, and the same mission to bring pure driving joy without breaking your bank account. But here’s the thing – the devil is in the details, and those details make all the difference!

Where the Magic Happens

While both cars share the same basic DNA, Toyota and Subaru have tuned their suspension setups differently, and this is where things get really interesting! The GR86 keeps the playful character of the original 86, with a rear end that’s more willing to step out and dance around corners. It’s like having a conversation with your car – every slight throttle input gets a response from the rear wheels, making even a trip to Tema feel like a track day adventure.

The BRZ, on the other hand, takes a more serious approach. Subaru stiffened the front springs by 7 percent and softened the rears by 11 percent, creating a more planted, neutral handling character. What does this mean for you? The BRZ is your go-to choice if you’re planning to hit the track regularly – it’s more predictable, more consistent, and easier to set fast lap times with.

Under perfect conditions, the Toyota can reach 60 mph a tenth of a second quicker at 5.8 seconds. However, the BRZ fights back where it matters – braking performance – stopping from 60 mph one foot shorter at 107 feet.

The Verdict

If you’re the type who wants to have sideways fun on your weekend drives through the Aburi Mountains, the GR86 is calling your name. It’s more playful, slightly more comfortable for daily driving, and costs a few hundred dollars less. But if you’re serious about track days and autocross events, the BRZ’s precision and consistency will serve you better.

Got your eyes on the BRZ? If so, you’re in luck! We’ll be covering the BRZ throughout the month of June, so make sure to stay in touch with Supercars.com.GH!
