Oscar Piastri secured his second Grand Prix victory of his career in what some would call one of the most action-packed races of the 2024 F1 season around the streets of Baku, but that was far from the only memorable thing to happen today. Excited? Keep reading, as we here at Supercars.com.GH bring you complete coverage of the 2024 Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
Starting from the front of the grid, Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc took the lead early and established a comfortable advantage before pitting for hard tires. However, a resurgent Piastri closed the gap rapidly after his own pit stop, pulling off a daring overtake on Leclerc with a late-braking move into Turn 1.
The battle for the lead intensified as Leclerc remained within DRS range of Piastri throughout the middle stint. Just as Piastri appeared to be pulling away with a few laps remaining, the drama unfolded further down the field. A fierce fight between Red Bull’s Sergio Perez and Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz for third and final position on the podium ended disastrously as the pair collided on the straight out of Turn 2, both crashing heavily and eliminating themselves from contention.
This late incident promoted George Russell’s Mercedes to an unexpected podium finish after he managed to overtake the championship leader, Max Verstappen, in the closing stages. Lando Norris demonstrated impressive racecraft, recovering from a disappointing 16th place on the grid to secure fourth position with a one-stop strategy gamble that saw him climb the order in the final laps.
Max Verstappen, frustrated by traffic throughout the race, could only manage a fifth-place finish, unable to challenge for the win after being stuck behind Alex Albon and Norris for a significant portion of the race. Further down the field, Fernando Alonso continued his strong season with a sixth-place finish for Aston Martin, while Albon continued his impressive form for Williams, bringing his car home in seventh.
Franco Colapinto’s stellar weekend culminated in an eighth-place finish for the second Williams, and Lewis Hamilton quietly managed to salvage a ninth-place finish after being forced to start from the pit lane due to taking on a new power unit. Rounding off the points scorers was Haas’ rookie Oliver Bearman, who secured a remarkable point on his debut for Haas in Baku, adding to the points he scored earlier in the season at Jeddah with Ferrari.
It is safe to say that both Championships have been left wide open following this thrilling Grand Prix, and with only a handful of rounds to go, this is turning into a must-watch season.
