What You Need To Know About Car Gears

Car gears are the parts of a vehicle that transfer power from the engine to the wheels through the transmission. Together with other parts of the gearbox or transmission, it determines the speed and direction of the car.

A car gear is a ratio between the input shaft and output shaft. The input shaft transfers energy from the engine to the gearbox, while the output shaft transfers energy to the wheels. It generates this ratio to perform two functions:

  • Transfer energy to the wheels
  • Reduce the vehicle’s speed

Your car’s crankshaft, the source of rotational energy, runs at tremendous speeds. If all this energy was transferred to your driveshaft (wheels), it would be nearly impossible to manoeuvre or slow down. To maintain control, the gear reduces this speed to a level the driveshaft can handle.

The gear does this through a series of interlocking teeth that moves energy from the crankshaft’s smaller fast-moving cogs to a larger, slow-moving cog that turns the wheels. 

As the gear changes, it transmits the required energy to the wheels. Higher gears deliver more speed to the wheels, while lower gears provide more power; this is why you need the first gears to move a stationary vehicle or climb a hill.

There are two main types of transmissions: automatics and manual systems. Automatic vehicles have evolved, however, leading to more adaptations and use cases.

A manual transmission system lets the driver manually change the gear ratio via a gear shaft and clutch pedal. The clutch is a device that completes or disrupts energy transmission to the wheels. Before changing gears, the driver steps on the clutch to engage it fully. Without the clutch, changing gears in a manual transmission would be impossible.

Manual transmissions are popular, making them easy to repair and maintain. They are more affordable too, and the gear oil lasts longer between changes. Some drivers enjoy the control they have in manually changing gears mid-drive because. Others prefer a manual transmission because it keeps them engaged. Unfortunately, cars with manual transmission can be more stressful to drive, especially in traffic. New drivers can find navigating the clutch-gear shaft-acceleration process daunting.

Automatic transmissions don’t rely on the driver to change gears. The car’s hydraulic system performs this autonomously via the torque converter. The driver needs only choose the drive mode for the vehicle to shift through a series of gear ratios to keep the vehicle moving.

As a result, compact cars consume less fuel than their larger counterparts. Smaller cars with smaller engines can typically travel more miles per gallon (mpg) than larger engines. This makes them less expensive and more environmentally friendly.

Automatic transmissions have better fuel efficiency. The lack of a clutch pedal also minimizes the stress associated with changing gears, making driving easier. Because you have both hands on the steering wheel, driving an automatic vehicle can feel safer for many people, as you are in a better position to control the driving direction.

Unfortunately, automatics are generally more expensive and require regular servicing. There is also sometimes a lack of thrill when driving an automatic car. The absence of gear and clutch makes driving a seemingly monotonous activity.

CVTs are a type of automatic transmission. Where the traditional automatic moves through a set number of gears, though, a CVT has no set gears. Vehicles with CVTs can produce endless gear ratios, producing a smoother ride than traditional automatics.

CVTs are more fuel efficient. They discharge fuel better, producing fewer emissions. Unfortunately, these cars are also more costly to maintain. Moreover, CVTs have a shorter lifespan; they can be prone to overheating and shuddering or their transmission system can fail.

This type of transmission combines features of manual and automatic transmissions. The merge allows you to choose between each transmission type; note that while you can manually change gears in the manual mode, there is no clutch pedal. The gears can be shifted up or down by paddles behind the steer or through the gear lever.

Semi-automatics will offer the fuel efficiency of an automatic and a better driving experience of a manual car.

The dual-clutch transmission is an automatic with two clutches, one for even-numbered gears and the other for odd-numbered ones. Due to this arrangement, DCTs offer faster gear shifts than traditional automatics. 

They are also lighter and preferred in some high-performance cars. However, they can be costly to maintain due to the more complex gear operation.

Difference Between Manual and Automatic Transmission Systems

Automatic transmissions don’t require driver input to change gears. The inherent hydraulic and torque converter performs this function autonomously, making automatics easier to drive.

Manual cars require direct input from the driver. The stick shift and clutch pedal are vital in this process, giving the driver a sense of control over the vehicle. Manual vehicles use engine/gear oil to maintain the gearbox and keep the gears functional. In automatic cars, separate transmission fluids perform this role.

Why Drift Car Gears are Different from Normal Car Gears

Drift gears are for racing and not regular driving. You will only use them in your race car or while drifting. You can’t drive with these gears because they won’t fit into your regular car because they are heavier.

The second thing you should know is that drift gears are made of metal, making them heavier than regular gears. This extra weight makes your car harder to control and steer. It may even cause your steering wheel to vibrate.

Also, drift car gears have a higher gear ratio than regular gears. This makes it possible to reach higher speeds faster than with regular gears. A car’s gearbox is responsible for transmitting power to the wheels. Without a gear, a vehicle will be stuck at one speed or become impossible to drive. 

Each transmission type offers advantages to the driver. To get the best out of your vehicle, it is important to understand the shortcomings and how to overcome them. Check your gearbox regularly at a competent mechanic’s garage to keep it in top shape.
