Airless tires are tires that do not need air pneumatic pressure. It is a new version of tires and an improvement from the pneumatic tires that were previously in use. Airless tires are currently used on a few small vehicles, including motorized golf carts and riding lawnmowers. Solid rubber or plastic is used to make the majority of airless tires.
Tire changing on a busy highway can be a horrible experience, as anyone who has had to do so can confirm. You suddenly have a flat tire while you’re traveling through a neighborhood where negligent roofers have dropped some nails. No driver wants to experience this difficulty.
Tires without air solve this issue. Having a metallic object pierce your tire is not something any driver will prefer. Since you’re not losing air and it won’t affect the performance of your tires, there is no need to check tire pressure.

Airless tires are heavier than the regular pneumatic radials and have a more consistent pattern. Especially in turns, Traction increases at low speeds.
This low-speed maneuverability will yield noticeable performance advantages for industrial vehicles like forklifts or off-road vehicles like ATVs.
Air plays an essential role in the performance of your tires, in addition to keeping them inflated. Due to tires’ high comfort capabilities can often absorb impact from holes and bumps. Airless tires have a lower suspension, resulting in a rougher ride.
Your vehicle might suffer more damage than good from this!Â
Because airless tires are stiffer, more road irregularities are transmitted to the suspension, vibrating the car’s passengers. This can make a ride that often isn’t too bad into a bumpy nightmare on rough roads.
These issues are considerably more apparent when traveling at higher speeds. The road noise and vehicle trembling at speeds over 50 mph are sufficient to draw attention to the tires.
- Airless tires do not go flat, thereby saving the cost of checking the air pressure, unlike the air-filled tires that require air to be pumped into them when the pressure goes low.Â
- The airless tire seems to be the winner in terms of durability. We will, however, need to wait and see what other possible cons this tire may have.Â
- Pneumatic tires have been around forever, and we know how they work and how to solve any problems that arise with them. Airless tires, on the other hand, are yet to prove this.
- Generally speaking, a car tire needs to be replaced after 10,000 miles or 18 months of use.Â
- Tires without air can last up to 40% longer before needing to be replaced.
It may seem like airless tires are better, but for this to be a fair debate, we think we should give them both a chance to exist in the market side-by-side, and then maybe we can say with certainty.Â
- Airless tires can withstand higher temperatures and pressures than air-filled tires; you won’t have to worry about them going flat.Â
- With air tires, you have the advantage of adjusting your tire pressure at any garage – it also makes replacing a punctured tire a simple process in case of emergencies, deflations, or in event of blow-outs.Â
- Currently airless tyres can’t be repaired.
Airless tires are not yet on the market because manufacturers are still testing the design and durability. Certainly, customers will be dissatisfied if the tires have faults or don’t last long. So manufacturers have to ensure they are truly ready for the market before they come out.
Different companies have already made their prototypes and have given out release dates. One cannot deny the tires’ appeal because General Motors partnered with Michelin to speed up the testing and production process. The tires have already passed many testing phases, and the company has given a release date of 2024.
Airless tires were originally developed by NASA for their moon rover and are still used to this day. The Martian and lunar rovers that NASA uses run on airless tires. Unfortunately, they can’t be used for vehicles down here on earth because they are so expensive. Hopefully, when tire manufacturers are finally able to launch airless tires at more affordable rates in 2024, we can see airless tires being used on Earth.
Overall, airless tires would be a welcome step forward for consumers and the auto industry.
