In Ghana, the regulation and enforcement of traffic laws is done by the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD). They require drivers to follow the country’s traffic rules and regulations on the road to prevent road accidents. Let’s look at some of the traffic violations and the fines that go with them.
Traffic violations occur when a driver breaks any of the laws that guide vehicle operations on highways and streets. These violations eg. reckless driving or driving without seat belts, are becoming popular among road users and lead to increasing road accidents.
The Road Traffic Act 2004 (683) serves as a guide for road and automobile users. This law highlights the approved driving guidelines, traffic offenses, and penalties for defaulters. Some of the common violations and penalties included.
- Dangerous driving
For this, you will be charged with not less than 10 penalty units or imprisoned for 3 to 6 months.
- Drunk drivingÂ
If caught, you will attract a fine of 5 to 10 penalty units or a jail time of 2 to 4 months.
Recently, the police department released a memo on minor traffic violations and fines for traffic violators in Ghana. This memo aims to reduce the rate of traffic violations and road accidents on public roads. With this list, motorists will know the applicable fines for traffic violations.
The traffic violations and fines on this list are.
- Driving without a back or front reflector, 60 GHC.
- Using a communication device while driving, 600 GHC.
- Failure to adhere to traffic laws, 120-300 GHC.
- Driving above the speed limits, 60 GHC.
- Driving without seat belts, 120-300 GHC.
Staying safe by adhering to traffic laws is better than facing the authorities for violating them. So, always obey traffic rules while on the road.
