You’ve probably seen them in movies, car showrooms, auctions, or music videos. Even after half a century, they seem not to be going away, with demand rising for most of them. They are exquisite, they are old, they are nineteenth-century sports cars!
High-performance cars produced so many years ago have come a long way in value, competing in pricing, and demand with newer and more modern ones. Some car enthusiasts would even vouch that older models of supercars are much stronger than the more recent models of today, even with the possibility of competing in speed with little engine tweaks.
Among the thousands produced during the nineteenth century, which of these legendary vehicles has remained relevant even to this day? Let’s look at the top ten sports cars that have stood the test of time!
The first on our list is the muscle sports car Chevrolet Corvette second generation model (C3), also known as Stingray. The C3 was a high-speed car for its time, making 0 – 60 mph in just 7.7 seconds. It sold more than 35,000 units in the early years of its release, with sales still racking up even today.
The car seems to catch the eye of celebrities, with stars like Robert Downey JR and George Clooney owning one.
Chevrolet put out over 500,000 Corvettes of the C3 generation throughout its 15-year production cycle, which ran from 1968 to 1982. It was a fast car for its time, reaching 60 mph in as low as 7.7 seconds; depending on the vehicle’s condition and upgrades, purchasing one could range between GHC 238,500 to GHC 409,425. Keep your eyes peeled and you may spot the Maroon Stingray on the streets of Accra.
The Lamborghini Miura supercar was in production between 1966 and 1973. When it was first released, the automobile was the fastest production road car. With a peak speed of 280 km/h and an acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.7 seconds. The Miura was the first supercar with a rear mid-engined two-seat layout.
A Lamborghini Miura costs millions of dollars nowadays, so owning one is usually for the financially strong. Expect to cost at least GHC 23 million at most auctions.
The Porsche 911 epitomises classic driving, especially before the 1974 famous upgrade. It made a name for itself as a quick and dependable sports car during its time, with a top speed of 130 mph.
Depending on the model, customisations, and condition of the original Porsche 911, it can be cheap or costly. It can be purchased at auctions for between GHC 159,000 and GHC 397,500, making it one of the most affordable vintage sports cars.
Another car worth mentioning is the Dodge Charger. It is also one of the market’s most popular sports cars, even used as the main ride in the Fast and Furious Franchise. The Dodge can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 5.4 sec, with an average recorded speed of about 150 mph.
It currently costs around GHC 1,192,500 to GHC 1,590,000 on the market at top condition.
Aston Martin built the DB4 sports series between 1958 and 1963. It had a traditional appearance, reached 100 km/h in 5.9 seconds, and could reach a top speed of roughly 136 mph.
Fun fact: The Aston Martin DB4 and DB5 supercars have featured in the 007 movie franchise, and this has contributed to making the car quite popular.Â
Even though there is a shortage, you may still find one on the market. With this model selling at GHC 100 million – GHC114 million the rarity and appeal have continuously raised the price over the decades.
The vintage VW Beetle, manufactured in the 1930s, epitomised ease of use and exemplary controls, making it arguably one of the most classic vehicles in history. The Beetle stands out as one of the most iconic vintage vehicles from the 20th century thanks to its distinctive appearance, which takes inspiration from the look of the beetle bug.
The price of the Volkswagen Beetle ranges from GHC 159,000 to about GHC 238,500. It is significantly simpler to obtain one because so many are now in operation.
In 1992, the McLaren F1 stepped into the market space, powered by a BMW S70/2 V12 engine, set a world record for the fastest production automobile in 1998 with a top speed of 242 mph. It’s tough to locate and possess because only 64 of these cars were made available for sale. Due to this, it is now expensive to purchase this vintage masterpiece, costing upwards of GHC 159 million.
Another muscle automobile made the list of the best classic vehicles ever made! After appearing in the well-known action-thriller film John Wick, the value of vintage Mustangs increased significantly, taking the price along with it. The movie ‘Gone in 60 Seconds’ also increased the popularity of the Mustang among the younger generation and car enthusiasts. The Mustang fastback’s top speed was 115 mph, with an acceleration of 0 to 100 km/h in 5.7 secs.
This beast is a perfectly modified model selling for around GHC 6.5 million. However, buyers can buy the Mustang for much less from private, individual sellers than at auctions.
A vintage Ferrari!Â
In June 2018, 1963, 250 GTO (chassis 4153GT) made a world record as the most expensive Ferrari sold in a private transaction for a dollar equivalent of about GHC 556 million!
The Ferrari 250 GTO, a unique model that achieved a top speed of 174 mph and a 0 to 60 mph time of 4.5 seconds, excels in its modernised design (even for its time).
It’s a car that has appreciated aggressively from its introduction in the 1960s to the present, with a current value worth millions.
The Ford Mustang and Plymouth Road Runner share a similar aesthetic. Yet, they differ significantly in terms of sales, engine power, and pricing.
First introduced in 1968 at a low GHC 190,134 at the time, it has successfully become a vintage sportscar to possess by car enthusiasts. The standard horsepower for this muscle car was 383 hp, and top-of-the-line models could reach 140 mph.
An intriguing fact is that because the car was named after the well-known Disney animation character, Plymouth paid Disney GHC 397,500 to use the title “Road Runner.”
