Dashboard Signs and Their Meanings

Driving can be a simple activity, but you must understand how your car works to be a good driver. For example, as a driver, there’s probably been a time you drove along, and suddenly you saw warning signs on your dashboard. This can be frightening, especially if you don’t know the meaning of the signs.

We will discuss some of the common dashboard signs and their meanings. This will help you identify them anytime they pop up and know what to do after seeing them. But, before we get into that, you must know that dashboard lights come in three colors.

When you see a red light, it is a warning sign which requires immediate attention. Yellow or orange is also a warning sign. However, this is not as urgent and may signify that your car needs to be repaired or serviced. A green or blue light shows that your vehicle is operating.

When you see this warning light, it means your engine is too hot. Stop driving after you see this because this can cause damage to your engine. Also, don’t try to open the hood immediately because you might get burnt.

This dashboard sign means one of two things. Either your vehicle is running low on oil or has a problem with its oil pressure system.

Engine warning or check engine lights shows that there is a problem with your engine or emissions. It can come in two forms; it is lit or continues to blink. Check here for more information.

You have a problem with your anti-lock braking system. Take your car to the repair shop for it to be fixed.

The airbag light means your car has an issue with its airbag system. When it is not fixed, the airbags will not deploy in an accident.

If this light comes on while driving, the car’s battery is not charging. It may be that your car has an electrical problem; a faulty battery, faulty alternator, or damaged cabling can cause it.

This is probably the most recognized dashboard sign. You either have a low fuel tank level or a problem with the fuel level measuring system.

This light goes off when you buckle your seatbelt.

This indicates there’s a problem with the car’s brake system. You have to check this immediately because the brakes are a very important part of the car.

The light indicates you have a problem with either your electric suspension system, traction control, or ABS. In addition, it is a reminder that you have to take your car to the repair shop for servicing.

This indicates that your transmission temperature is higher than recommended, or your car may have a problem with its temperature measurement.

An automatic gearbox warning can be seen in automatic transmission cars. It indicates that there is a problem with the automatic transmission or the system controlling it.
