The exciting 2022 Formula 1 season came to a thrilling end in Abu Dhabi this weekend. Although both the championships were done and dusted with several rounds to go, there were several battles to be fought in this race as well. A Front Row Lockout
Yesterday, Red Bull locked out the front row during qualifying for the first time this season, and they converted that into a blistering race start on Sunday. Verstappen bolted from the pole position, and Perez did a fantastic job in keeping the Ferraris and Mercedes behind.
Elsewhere, Lando Norris got past George Russel at the start, and Perez had to fight hard to fend off an initial attack from Leclerc. Once the chaos settled, the Red Bull pair were leading the race from a comfortable margin.
Hamilton In Trouble
Lewis Hamilton had a bumpy start from the moment the lights went out. Initially, he had to battle with Carlos Sainz for 4th position, cutting the corner and bouncing over the rumble strips in a manner that was reminiscent of last year.
This seemed to have done some damage to his W13, as the 7-time world champion seemed to be much slower than his younger teammate. Later he was hampered by a bad strategy call and had to retire from the race due to a hydraulic failure during the last part of the race. The British driver would be disappointed with the season he has had, going winless for the first time since he made his debut in 2007.
A Record-Extending Victory
Max Verstappen cruised his way to another victory, bringing the tally up to 15 in a 22-race season. This is a phenomenal achievement, to say the least, and is indicative of the dominance the Dutchman has had all year. Charles Leclerc managed to finish in front of Sergio Perez in 2nd, claiming the runner-up position in the Driver’s Championship in the process. The Ferrari driver would be hoping for better luck next year, to put up a challenge to the dominant Verstappen. The top 3 didn’t forget to treat the audience to some donuts at the end as well.
A Former Champion Says Goodbye To The Sport
The 2010,2011,2012, and 2013 Formula 1 World Champion, German driver Sebastian Vettel retired from the sport today, claiming P10 in his final outing. The four-time champion has had an illustrious career that spanned several teams and 53 Grand Prix victories, and it would be an understatement to say that the whole of F1 would miss his presence on the grid.
So, that’s the end of the 2022 Formula 1 season, and we will have to wait until next year to get that thrilling racing action back.
