2022 Brazilian Grand Prix – FP1 & Qualifying

The Formula 1 paddock heads to Brazil for the penultimate round of the 2022 season. In addition to being the 22nd round, this weekend will host the third and final sprint race. So, the sessions will take place differently, with the first practice session and qualifying taking place this Friday. New honorary Brazilian citizen Lewis Hamilton was one of the many drivers who were complaining about the lack of grip around the 4.309-kilometer-long Autódromo José Carlos Pace. The Mercedes driver slid his way around the track, ending up in P5 at the end of FP1.

Carlos Sainz had more disappointing news coming his way, as it was announced that the Spaniard will be taking a five-place grid penalty for taking another Internal Combustion Engine. Lance Stroll also faced some issues during the session, while his teammate Sebastian Vettel, who is taking part in his final Brazilian Grand Prix, ended up impressively in P7.

The Red Bulls had another impressive weekend, with Sergio Perez scoring the fastest time of the session, with the 2022 World Champion Max Verstappen securing P3. They were split in the middle by the Ferrari of Charles Leclerc, who is still on the hunt to secure second place in the championship.

Qualifying

The Haas garage was in elation, as Kevin Magnussen scored a fairytale pole position at the 2022 Brazilian Grand Prix Qualifying session. The session was affected by the unpredictable weather in Sao Paulo, with on-and-off rain hampering the session.

A late-session tire gamble did not pay off for Leclerc, as bad strategy once again limited the Monegasque driver’s performance. He ended the session with a disappointing P10. George Russell spun off into a gravel trap in his Mercedes, bringing out the red flag and ultimately handing Magnussen the pole position in his 100th outing for Haas.

Lando Norris was impressive as always, ending the session in an impressive P4. Carlos Sainz was P5, which means that he will start the session in tenth position thanks to his grid penalty. Max Verstappen was P2 and will be looking to perform at his maximum in tomorrow’s sprint race to clench yet another pole position before 2022 comes to an end.
