The second day of the Grand Prix weekend saw plenty of lockups as well as some mighty fast laps. Who held the bragging rights after the dust settled? Join Supercars.GH in our 2022 Mexico City Grand Prix FP3 and qualifying review to find out!
After his big crash yesterday, Charles Leclerc was back on track in his Ferrari F1-75. The Monegasque driver will be starting his 100th Formula 1 race tomorrow, which is a significant milestone in the young driver’s career. He recorded the fourth fastest time of the session but was displeased about the handling of his red stallion.
Several drivers experienced lockups during the session, including Sergio Perez, Pierre Gasly, and Alex Albon. Mick Schumacher lost control and spun his Haas, but was able to keep it away from the barriers.
The Mercedes pair recorded the fastest times of the session, with George Russell leading from a former pole sitter, Lewis Hamilton. If they keep up this pace, we could see the first victory for the silver arrows in their so far winless 2022 season.
As the chequered flag fell, Max Verstappen was once again on the top of the timing sheets, securing his first pole position in Mexico. The 2022 Drivers World Champion has looked unstoppable all season, and if he wins tomorrow, will set a new record for the most race victories in a single season.
For a significant part of qualifying, it looked like one of the Mercedes drivers were on their way to clench pole position. But, both made mistakes during their final runs in Q3, denying them that accolade. Lewis Hamilton even had a lap time deleted for exceeding track limits and had to fight hard on the next lap to get back up to P3.
Hometown hero Sergio Perez was a somewhat disappointing P4, followed by the Ferrari of Carlos Sainz. Valtteri Bottas put in a breathtaking lap for P6, splitting the two Ferraris and putting him in front of Leclerc.
Behind them, a unique turn of events saw two drivers record the same lap time. They were Mick Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel. The real-life friends recorded an identical 1:20.419 in their trips around the 4.304 Kilometer long Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez.
