2022 Singapore Grand Prix – Race Overview

Singaporean Grand Prix

Rain, drama, and an unexpected winner. In terms of entertainment, the 2022 Singapore Grand Prix had it all. Did Max Verstappen clinch his second World Championship? Or was Leclerc able to hold him off for another race weekend? Stay with us to find out as we take a trip through the narrow streets of Singapore under the flood lights.

A Delayed Start

Similar to yesterday, the sky above Singapore was filled with rain clouds as the race was just about to begin. The ensuing rainstorm meant that the race had to be delayed for over an hour before the much-awaited trip through the Marina Bay circuit could begin. Not only did this mean the race was trickier, but it played a part in the tire strategy for the race as well.

Collisions All-Around

The changeable conditions meant that plenty of drivers met with collisions as the rain went on. Nicholas Latifi and Zhou Guanyu made contact, bringing both their evenings to an early end. Elsewhere, Latifi’s teammate Albon also had a dreadful race as he spun out relatively early on in the race as well.

However, the mistakes were not limited to the back marker teams. Former winner Lewis Hamilton ran wide and collided with the barrier, shattering his hopes on what was indicated to be a great weekend for the silver arrows.

Elsewhere, the Alpine team also had an evening to forget. Both Esteban Ocon and Fernando Alonso were unable to finish the race, highlighting the reliability issues that have been plaguing the team all season. With both retirements being suspected to be caused by engine issues, the French-based team has some work to do if they want to keep a headstart in their battle with McLaren for fourth place in the constructor’s championship.

A Charge By Verstappen

On a weekend where he could have clinched his second consecutive World Driver’s Championship, Max Verstappen was unable to capitalize. A late fuel issue during the qualifying session yesterday meant that the Dutchman had to abort his final flying lap, relegating him to P8 at the start.

A slow start did not help his attempts to win the race, as he fell to P12. However, a late charge saw him claw his way back to the front, all the way until he eventually locked up and ran straight through a corner. The Red Bull driver eventually recovered and finished the race in the eighth position. It seems that He will have to wait for a few more weekends to clinch the title.

Perez Wins

2022 Singapore Grand Prix

However, it was a celebration on the other side of the Red Bull garage. After qualifying second, Sergio Perez drove brilliantly, handing him his first victory around the Marina Bay street circuit. It was not without controversy, as the Mexican received a 5-second time penalty after the race. But, a lead of over 7 seconds ensured that he kept the race win for himself.

Next weekend, the paddock heads to Japan for the second back-to-back race on Asian soil. Will Verstappen claim the Driver’s title there? Join us next race weekend to find out. Until then, do not forget to check out some previous F1 articles on our website and social media pages.
