After a summer break that felt like an eternity, we got our first taste of F1 action during the FP1 and FP2 sessions of the Belgian Grand Prix. Stay with us to find out what happened this Friday at Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps.

Free Practice 1

Ferrari’s momentum remains after the summer break, as it was the two scarlet cars who finished the first practice session at the top. Carlos Sainz was the Ferrari driver at the top of the timing sheets, as he set the best lap time of the evening at 1:46.538, almost seven tenths faster than his teammate.

Speaking of his teammate Leclerc is one of few drivers set to start Sunday’s race at the back of the grid due to taking on new powertrain components. The Monegasque has some catching up to do if he wants to keep his World Championship hope alive. Behind him was the current championship leader Max Verstappen, another driver who will take an engine penalty this weekend.

The F1 paddock saw a new face this weekend as Liam Lawson got behind the wheel of Pierre Gasly’s AlphaTauri for his first taste of F1. The New Zealander finished the session with a respectable P19. The only red flag was brought out by the Haas of Kevin Magnussen, as his VF-22 came to a stop due to a suspected issue. The heavens opened up during the latter stages of the session, giving flashbacks to last year’s race. Is this a sign of things to come? Stick with us to find out.

  1. Carlos SAINZ 1:46.538
  2. Charles LECLERC 1:46.607
  3. Max VERSTAPPEN 1:46.755

Free Practice 2

It was the reigning world champion who triumphed during the second free practice session of the Belgian Grand Prix. The current championship leader was over a second faster than the rest of the field. The only driver who came close to his time was Charles Leclerc. The Ferrari driver recorded a best time of 1:46.369.

Lando Norris looked impressive with a great lap that secured him third position on the grid. Lance Stroll scored a surprising P4, which was even faster than the second Ferrari of Sainz. Gasly returned to the seat of his AlphaTauri and secured a lap that put him 14th on the timing sheets.

  1. Max Verstappen 1:45.507
  2. Charles Leclerc 1:46.369
  3. Lando Norris 1:46.589

With both Red Bull and Ferrari looking to be on form, it will surely be a spicy second half of the 2022 Formula 1 season. Join us here tomorrow for our coverage of the rest of the Belgian Grand Prix weekend.
